WHO I AM & WHAT I DO

My Journey

In my mid-20's, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease.  In my mid-30's, I was hospitalized once a year for ten years.  Western doctors could not answer where this disease came from or how to treat it.  I was prescribed a lot of pharmaceuticals.  Nothing worked to cure the problem... just suppressed the symptoms.  I had been a marathon runner and triathlete up until becoming sick, but was now too weak to enjoy either of those activities. Someone suggested yoga.  I tried it and was hooked.  This was the beginning of my journey into taking charge of my own health & wellness.

THAI YOGA MASSAGE

2,500 years ago, a dynamic bodywork therapy based upon yoga and Ayurveda practices, appeared in the temples of Thailand. This therapeutic art was directly rooted in the Indian healing traditions of Ayurvedic medicine.  This is Thai Yoga Massage.

Thai Yoga Massage is a unique healing modality in which the practitioner guides the client through a series of yoga postures, while palming and thumbing along the body’s energy (‘Sen’) lines and pressure points. Together these actions result in a comprehensive full body treatment that relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically.

Anyone, with the exception of those with a serious illness, recent surgery or injury will benefit from the restorative quality of Thai Yoga Massage.  It is especially helpful to athletes who work their bodies in repetitive ways such as running, tennis, gym/weight lifting, cycling and cross training.

Thai Yoga Massage is also beneficial for anyone who has sustained an injury, mental trauma, are under stress or suffering for chronic conditions like Crohns, IBS, Fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's, to name a few.

Thai Yoga Massage is performed on a mat on the floor; both client and practitioner are dressed in comfortable clothing allowing ease of movement and flexibility.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE

Myofascial release therapy (MFR) involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. By going slowly and waiting for the body’s natural rhythm, the fascia responds by elongating, rehydrating, and reorganizing.

MFR is a hands-on treatment performed on the skin with no oils or creams. The gentle tension between the therapist’s hands and the patient’s skin is what allows access to the fascia in a way that the gliding effect of traditional massage cannot achieve. By following the unique lines of tension in each patient’s body, the MFR therapist can reach deeply into the tissues and uncover significant restrictions.

WHAT IS FASCIA?

Fascia is a web-like tissue that runs three-dimensionally throughout the body. It surrounds and supports every cell, nerve, organ, muscle, and bone in your body. When it is restricted, it dehydrates and becomes like glue. It not only loses its mobility, but it can also exert force on underlying structures.  This tension can create pain. It can also reduce range of motion in joints, cause pain and fatigue, and can even cause bizarre, seemingly unrelated symptoms when fascia entraps nerves. Fascia is tightly integrated into the autonomic nervous system. It runs through the body in a web, penetrating and supporting every bodily system. Traditional therapies will often address only muscles and their insertions and origins. But fascia can form longer lines of tension, such as those running from the front of your right shoulder to the back of your left hip. Restrictions in the fascial web can cause strange referred pain and discomfort. For example, tension in the left quadriceps could refer discomfort into the left side of your diaphragm. Additionally, dysfunction in your lower spine can easily cause headaches. Therefore, MFR does not simply treat a patient’s symptoms.

TREAMENT:

At your first MFR session, I will spend a bit of time getting to know you, finding out your goals and expectations, and answering any questions you may have about MFR.   I will assess your posture and structural balance as a starting place for treatment. Afterward, I will likely give you some homework, which usually involves some gentle self-treatment stretches to maximize your results.

Compared to other forms of bodywork, myofascial release is very gentle and slow.  MFR never forces, but rather gently waits for the body to release restrictions on its own schedule. This eliminates most of the pain from traditional bodywork.

PRIVATE & GROUP YOGA INSTRUCTION

There are all kinds of yoga styles to enjoy.  I encourage you to try them all.  Although I started my practice with an emphasis on flow and power yoga, the style that most resonates with me today is Forrest Yoga, created by Ana Forrest.  Forrest Yoga does not require strength or flexibility; it only requires a willingness to learn how to feel authentically and respond honestly. The practice is founded on four pillars -- Breath, Strength, Integrity and Spirit.

Forrest Yoga teaches you how to breathe deeply, connect in feeling with your body, use the power of breath to bring aliveness into every cell of your body and ignite your passion for living.  Forrest Yoga teaches you how to connect to your core, how to be strong and how to be centered. Forrest Yoga teaches you to become proficient at safely tailoring each pose to work best for you, particularly with physical and emotional injuries. By learning to work honestly at your edges, you develop effective tools to deal with fear and struggle.

This makes it possible for integrity, self-awareness and playful curiosity to become part of your daily life.  Forrest Yoga's intent is to create a sense of freedom, a connection to your Spirit and the courage to walk as your Spirit dictates.

In our personal one-on-one or group yoga sessions, I will teach you to go deeper to find your truth, and encourage you to take these gifts you have earned beyond the mat and into the rest of your life.  Together we will learn how to honor and celebrate the beauty of life and the power of Spirit.  This yoga practice will challenge you to heal, grow and welcome your Spirit home.

MISSION

Together we can!

My mission is to disrupt the world of traditional medicine, one person at a time. Through a variety of treatments, inspirations and techniques that are part of every single session, I will show you how to unlock the potential of self-healing. I can joyfully say many of my clients never return to just traditional medical treatments after their first visit.   Your body, your health, your choice.

Let me, help you, help yourself.
